Donation comes first
Furniture, working appliances, clothing, housewares and building materials in usable condition go to local donation partners rather than a landfill. Habitat for Humanity ReStores in the Charlotte area take a wide range of furniture and fixtures.
The test is simple: would someone reasonably use this tomorrow? If yes, it should not be in a landfill regardless of how tired it looks to you.
Metal is worth separating
Appliances, bed frames, exercise equipment, gutters and fencing are largely steel and aluminium, and scrap metal recycling is both well established and genuinely effective. Separating metal from a load is one of the highest-impact things a crew can do.
Refrigerant-bearing appliances add a step. The refrigerant must be recovered by a certified handler before the shell can be scrapped, which is a legal requirement, not an optional courtesy.
Electronics and hazardous items are restricted
Televisions, monitors, computers and batteries are banned from North Carolina landfills and must go to e-waste processing. Paint, solvents, pesticides and motor oil go to household hazardous waste facilities.
Mecklenburg County operates full-service drop-off centres for exactly these categories. A crew that knows the network uses it; a crew that does not tends to mix everything together.
What is left is a much smaller load
Once donation, metal, e-waste, clean wood and cardboard have been pulled out, the genuine landfill portion of a typical household load is considerably smaller than the truck that arrived.
It is a reasonable thing to ask about when you book. Any company that sorts properly will be glad to tell you exactly where each category goes.
